You Have Completely Discredited Your Tone- Acquired Human Rights Accolade! - Mahama To Akufo-Addo

Former President John Mahama says he's floored at the rising torrent of free speech criminalisation in the country under the Akufo-Addo led administration.

To him, the repression of dissent under the governing NPP could have negative counteraccusations on the nation while President Akufo-Addo also risks having freedom of speech and a free media not counted as part of the heritage he willed.

"Your conduct as President have completely discredited your tone- acquired accolade as a mortal rights counsel and activist. Ghana has long surfaced from the unfortunate history where intelligencers were intimidated by incarceration and brutalization.

"I sweat that if you don't take immediate action to arrest this unfortunate trend, when you exit the high office of President in January 2025, freedom of speech and a free media will clearly not be counted as part of the heritage you leave before,"

Describing himself as a family in a letter to the President, Mr Mahama said his successor is setting a dangerous precedent with the recent apprehensions and execution of intelligencers in the country.

This letter comes on the reverse of the jailing of Power FM Journalist Oheneba Boamah and the arrest of Accra FM’s Bobie Ansah and Captain Smart of Media General, each over speech- related issues.

" Now, in a space of lower than two weeks, four people have suffered police action, criminalizing their right to free speech. As Attorney General, at the time, who led the repeal of the felonious calumniation law, in order that citizens could freely express their views, it's unconscionable to be suppressing the rights and criminalising the speech of citizens and intelligencers. It's indeed more worrying when the power of the state is used as a bendy tool in this intimidating bid".

 Dear President Nana Akufo-Addo,

.I'm floored at the growing criminalisation of speech and journalism in Ghana, under your watch, in this 21st century.

An investigative intelligencer was boggled, under veritably disquieting circumstances. Yet, while the Ghanaian people and the transnational community have demanded justice, Government’s incapability or reluctance to act is egregious to all. The police have nearly remitted the examinations into this brutal murder.

There have also been several disturbing incidents of importunity of intelligencers in the line of duty; we've witnessed media establishments closed down on your instructions, despite numerous prayers to you.

Now, in a space of lower than two weeks, four people have suffered police action, criminalizing their right to free speech. As Attorney General, at the time, who led the repeal of the felonious calumniation law, in order that citizens could freely express their views, it's unconscionable to be suppressing the rights and criminalising the speech of citizens and intelligencers. It's indeed more worrying when the power of the state is used as a bendy tool in this intimidating bid.

Radio and Television presenter Captain Smart was dragged from court, and although he'd been granted bail, transferred into detention. Another radio presenter, Oheneba Boamah Bennie has been confined for statements he allegedly made. A civil society activist was arrested, detained, transferred to court on felonious charges, granted bail and yet detained again for making a statement against you, President Akufo-Addo.

As if to suggest dissimulation behind the serious decriminalization of speech that you led, another radio presenter, Bobie Ansah, has been arrested, detained and charged – criminalized for speaking and making allegations against your woman.

Again, last week, security help linked to your party brutalized a radio presenter and patron in the megacity of Takoradi. Similar lawless attacks have moment come common circumstances in our country.

President Akufo-Addo, you can not continue to oppress the people, criminalize speech when these matters are basically civil in nature, if you feel offended by them.

It's indeed more sad that the Intelligencers Association and its elderly members, numerous of our church and other moral leaders, spooked because of the rough and dictatorial governance you're running, have remained quiet in the face of this disturbing development in our growing republic.

This is a dangerous design you're fashioning for our dear nation and it mustn't be encouraged. Your conduct as President have completely discredited your tone- acquired accolade as a mortal rights counsel and activist. Ghana has long surfaced from the unfortunate history where intelligencers were intimidated by incarceration and brutalization.

I sweat that if you don't take immediate action to arrest this unfortunate trend, when you exit the high office of President in January 2025, freedom of speech and a free media will clearly not be counted as part of the heritage you leave behind.
